My name is Sabine Priglinger and I am passionate about arts and performance writing, research and research support. Over the years, I have managed, curated, edited and coordinated projects in cultural and academic fields.
Creating, experiencing and reflecting on art has fascinated and occupied me for a long time. I trained as a sculptor at art school and later studied stage and costume design in Graz and Berlin. After completing my diploma thesis on Anton Chekhov’s Ivanov in 2009, I collaborated in various projects exploring different roles in the fields of film, theater, performance, and fine arts.
As much as I enjoyed that phase of practical work, I found myself wanting to delve deeper into questions and content and started to attend courses and seminars in theater, film, and media studies.
My curiosity led me to embark on an in-depth research project on Tehching Hsieh’s durational live art performance Time Clock Piece (1980–81), exploring concepts of time measurement in performance studies, art theory, and philosophy. As a PhD student at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, I found my passion for interdisciplinary studies and deepened my understanding of the politics of the temporal within artistic processes. In particular, I concentrated on working conditions, rhythms and time structures.
In 2014, I was fortunate to be awarded a research grant that allowed me to spend six months in London and explore the resources of the Live Art Development Agency (LADA), MayDay Rooms, and the University of Roehampton. This experience broadened my horizons and enriched my research and writing practice, opening up new avenues of exploration and collaboration.
I successfully defended my dissertation at the end of 2022 and am pleased that these years of research have finally come together in one coherent work. Read more about my dissertation here.
In addition to my PhD research, I helped establish the Cathrin Pichler Archive for Arts and Sciences (CPA) at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 2013 to 2017 and worked in exhibition management and marketing at Kunsthalle Exnergasse | WUK from 2017 to 2022.
Since September 2023 I have worked at the Art | Research | Support Department at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
In the process, I have gained many different experiences, including documentation and archiving, project grant applications and accounting, on- and offline marketing, curating, planning, and realizing exhibitions and other events.
My practical and theoretical experiences have allowed me to gain multiple perspectives in the cultural field and academia. I advocate for an intersectional approach and am passionate about exploring how socially constructed hierarchies and injustices can find expression, resonance, and resistance in the arts. In addition to “time-based” artforms like performance and video, I like to focus on the temporal relations within and beyond artworks and practices – on experimentation, research and production processes.
